Another busy one - Colin from Paper Lions called in from Sackville where the band is on show 2 of the "Rolling Oyster Revue" (which brings them to Winnipeg next Thursday, October 20th where they'll play the LO Pub and record a live session here at UMFM). Then we had Casey from Ohbijou talking about their new album Metal Meets and a tour that will bring them to the West End Cultural Centre on November 12th (with Snowblink, who I'm in the process of setting up with an interview as well!). And finally I reconnected with Dean Tzenos of Odonis Odonis to talk about his new album on Daps Records, Hollandaze.

For next week's episode I've got Lou Canon in to record a live session and interview early in the week and a live session with Paper Lions when they arrive on the 20th and I'm in the process of finalizing an interview with Mark Sultan who is playing Pop Soda's on October 29th with This Hisses and Greg Arcade & The Electrics.

Stay tuned.

How It Went Down: October 7, 2011

Well, I lied. The live session with Oh My Darling isn't happening tonight. Instead, it'll be closer to their November 5th Sweet Nostalgia CD release CD release show at the West End Cultural Centre. But I did get Electro Quarterstaff into the studio for a live session before this Sunday night's Akyroyd CD release at the Park Theatre so I'll be playing some of that. I did talk to Boots from Splash ' N Boots and Dam-Funk though, so two out of three ain't bad.

Here's what was played:

Set One: 6:30 PM - 7 PM

Smoky Tiger - "Warden of the Plains" [Manitoba Folkways]
Interview with David Wyatt & Darla Stewart from Reel Pride
Conn-Shawnery - "Chasing The Conn" [Independent]

Set Two: 7 PM - 7:30 PM

Rain Over St. Ambrose - "Chemtrails of Happiness" [Acadian Embassy]
Interview with Boots from Splash 'n Boots
Electro Quarterstaff - "Waltz of the Swedish Meatball" [Live at UMFM]
Prince Rama - "Golden Silence" [Paw Tracks]

Set Three: 7:30 PM - 8 PM

Interview with Dam-Funk
Dam-Funk - "Brookside Park" [Stones Throw]
Dam-Funk - "Inside of You" [Stones Throw / Scion AV]

I can't completely guarantee what will be on the show next week (October 14th) as I'm still firming things up with guests, but I can tell you that I have a lot of live sessions coming up, including Montreal's Bent By Elephants, and interviews with Ohbijou, authors Richard Gwynn, Nick Thompson, Frances Greenslade and more. Rest assured there will be music and arts and a heads-up on local shows.

How It Went Down: September 30, 2011

A shortened show due to the Bison Football game (pre-game at 7:45, kickoff at 8pm) but I still managed to get two guests into the studio. The Smith brothers from The Perms came in with a copy of their brand new album, Sofia Nights, which we discussed and debuted tracks from (CD release show is Friday, October 14th at the Park Theatre). We also had an awesome live session with the guys from Sun Wizard. They were in town to open for the Pack a.d. at the LO Pub and banged out some live demos of unreleased material (in the meantime, pick up a copy of their excellent album, Positively 4th Avenue).

Here's what was played:

Set One: 6:30 PM - 7 PM

The Perms - "Make It Through" [Hugtight Records]

On tomorrow's show, we're back to a full hour-and-a-half and it's chock full of goodness. An interview with Dam-Funk who blew the lid off the Pyramid during the Jazz Winnipeg Festival and who is back on Monday October 10th, this time with his full band. Folks with little kids will want to tune into my interview with children's entertainers and Treehouse TV stars Splash 'n Boots (I'll have a sweet prize pack to give away) and a live session with Oh My Darling.
